It’s Time For A Social Media Detox

I am going to be trying a little experiment over the next month/months/I donโ€™t know how long for, but I have decided to stop using my private Instagram account, alongside my Facebook, and see whether this makes any difference to my mood, or makes me have a different view on life.

Itโ€™s interesting, as unknown to me, a colleague at work was having a conversation with another colleague about how social media really is just promoting the good things in life and making everything seem perfect when it most truly isnโ€™t. Baring in mind this conversation happened last week, and I just so happened to log off of my accounts this Friday (16th of April) without knowing. It obviously isnโ€™t just me that feels the same, and I just thought it was such a coincidence someone else could see the same things I could, and that realistically, social media has gotten out of hand.

I do understand that some of you will be asking why Iโ€™m still posting on my ๐๐‹๐Ž๐† Instagram if this is a โ€œrealโ€ detox, but the reason being is that my blog Instagram makes me happy. My private one does not anymore, which is why Iโ€™ve made the decision to not look, or go back into it until Iโ€™m happy to. Of course the colleague I spoke to today (Saturday the 17th of April) gave me her reasons as to why she doesnโ€™t really use Facebook anymore, and those are many reasons I couldnโ€™t have agreed more with. I do of course have my own, but in terms of being happy, social media should honestly not have the dictatorship of ruining your mood or day. If anything, my blog makes me happy as Iโ€™ve met so many lovely people through this platform and itโ€™s all full of people that yes, some you havenโ€™t met, but for the most part want to show support for your work and the things you do. Unfortunately there will always be one or two who donโ€™t want this for you and that is why you do things your way, and follow your own ideas and goals.

For now my private Instagram holds some of my favourite memories from the past. Some pictures I like to look back on, and of course, there will always be some I wish I had never posted, but no ones perfect, and it just highlights how things have changed over time, and personally for me, for the better. Let me know if a social detox media is something you have done before (even if you simply didn’t go on Twitter, but kept up to date with your Facebook, etc), and whether you feel it did you the world of good, or even if it was a waste of time.

Have a brilliant week, whether youโ€™re back at work, school, or are simply cracking on with your to-do list. See you all on Friday. โœŒ๐Ÿป๐Ÿงก

  1. Good luck with your social media detox! ๐Ÿ™‚ Itโ€™s hard in the beginning but gets easier with time. I recommend giving your password to someone you trust and getting them to change it for you. It worked like a charm for me – I donโ€™t use IG or FB and managed to stay off of those platforms. Iโ€™m accomplishing so much more with my life now without the distractions!

Social media creates the illusion that we are being productive when weโ€™re really not. Weโ€™re scrolling, scrolling, scrolling, comparing ourselves to everyone else. Interacting with ppl on IG seemed really fake to me and much more shallow compared to WP. I still use WhatsApp but I use it for communication purposes only.

    • Sounds quite refreshing if you ask me, and that it’s had a really good impact on your general health and wellbeing. It’s only been less than a week and I’m already starting to feel a lot better from it.
That’s so true! I never even thought to look at it from that perspective! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

      • You might be wondering why I use WhatsApp but not fb messenger. Fb messenger is like texting, right? The issue I have with messenger is that itโ€™s too closely connected to FB itself. Also, idk if things have changed but for iPhone users, we didnโ€™t have the option of a basic version of Fb messenger. Iโ€™m still weighing the pros and cons of using it again but found it to be a huge time suck. For this reason I recommend WhatsApp (and old fashioned email) for communication purposes only ๐Ÿ™‚

Iโ€™m glad that you are already starting to reap the benefits of taking a social media detox! ๐Ÿ‘Œ
